What is Computer Numerical Control or CNC?
Computer Numerical Control or CNC helps automate the manufacturing process by controlling the movements of the machine in the form of code.
The first machines or what we call manual machines were controlled manually by turning dials and levers while performing inspection periodically. In contrast on a CNC machine once the setup is completed only minor tweaks are needed over the course of production to maintain quality. In fact, making complex parts of designs today on a manual machine are virtually impossible with finer tolerance and more complex geometries than ever before. The CNC code is generated using a CAD (Computer Aided Design) model and programmed using CAM (Computer Aided Machine) software. The output: code that controls the machine’s movement to make a part.
What is CNC Milling?
Milling is the most common type of machinery found in today’s industry. At its basic fundamentals milling uses rotary cutters to remove material from the tool, which is fed through the work piece via one of the 3 common axis. Milling machines are very popular due to the flexibility of doing a variety of components.
CNC machines help ensure that most complex designs are not only made efficiently but also more accurately, as well assuring the customer the part is made. 5-axis machining allows the most intricate mechanical design with complex geometry made with minimal setup translating to savings for you the customer. The type of CNC machines we have are both vertical and horizontal machining centers with available 5-axis machining. Parts typically suited for CNC milling are:
- Heat sinks
99.5″ x 33.7″ x 30″
2525mm x 856mm x 762mm
24″ x 12″ x 8″
610mm x 305mm x 203mm
0.078″ x 0.078″ x 0.197″
2mm x 2mm x 5mm
While milling machines are the most common machine found in the common metal working shop with the Affinity advantage we have the high efficiency CNC milling machining centers with 5-axis machining capabilities.
