What is Computer Numerical Control or CNC?

Computer Numerical Control or CNC helps automate the manufacturing process by controlling the movements of the machine in the form of code.

The first machines or what we call manual machines were controlled manually by turning dials and levers while performing inspection periodically. In contrast on a CNC machine once the setup is completed only minor tweaks are needed over the course of production to maintain quality. In fact, making complex parts of designs today on a manual machine are virtually impossible with finer tolerance and more complex geometries than ever before. The CNC code is generated using a CAD (Computer Aided Design) model and programmed using CAM (Computer Aided Machine) software. The output: code that controls the machine’s movement to make a part.

What is CNC Milling?

Milling is the most common type of machinery found in today’s industry. At its basic fundamentals milling uses rotary cutters to remove material from the tool, which is fed through the work piece via one of the 3 common axis. Milling machines are very popular due to the flexibility of doing a variety of components.

What is CNC Turning?

Turning is a process used in manufacturing where bars of material typically round bars are clamped in a chuck or collet and rotated at high speeds. The cutting tool is then fed into the rotating workpiece and removes material as per the program. Turning Machines otherwise known as Lathes are one of the most effective ways to remove material. Parts typically well suited for our Lathe machines are:

Surface Grinding

What is Surface Grinding?

Surface Grinding is one of the most common of grinding operations. Surface Grinding is typically done as a finishing operation. During this operation an abrasive wheel goes over the work pieces back and forth while removing minimal material with each pass. Surface Grinding is used to smoothen out the surface while making the surface flat.

Surface grinding is needed when:

  • Remove of material from hard surface is needed
  • High degree of accuracy is needed
  • Very high surface finish is required

Production Part Approval Process / First Article Inspection Report

Production Part Approval Process and First Article Inspection Report or PPAP and FAIRS is a report sent either by the customer to be filled or a dimensional report supplied by Affinity to make sure your first parts are exactly what you needed before going into production. Working with your quality department we can make sure all the documentation you need for your records are supplied along with the first delivery.

  • CMM

    CMM or Coordinate Measuring Machine is a machine that measures geometry including geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T) by touching or probing points on a surface of a component. The benefit of a CMM over other measuring equipment is you are able to check features that are non-linear. Our customers have used our CMM services to ensure that the part design is to specification with the form of a CMM Report. That way you can be assured that the part you have meets the design you need.

  • COC

    When required Affinity can supply the required documents when needed by the customer. COC or Certificate of Compliance or Certificate of Conformance are common documents that our customers need. This our customers have the confidence that the product meets all the specifications and is safe.

  • Material Certificates

    In today’s industry the traceability of materials is absolutely crucial for the end users to make sure the product was made not only correctly but from the right materials. From incoming inspection of materials to outgoing QC our processes and procedure are there to make sure you have the required documents you need.

  • FAA

    FAA or First Article Approval can give the confidence that the part you have designed can work. With a pre-arranged schedule once the first part is off the machine we can send it for your approval right away. That way we will not produce more until you are satisfied.
